This print is based on photographs taken at Mount Whaleback, an iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It is a place of stunning contrasts – some of the most beautiful colours I have ever seen, in the midst of the most horrendous destruction of landscape. Where once there was a mountain, there is now a giant valley. It is almost impossible to get your head around just how much rock has been moved in the 60 odd years since the mine opened.
The placement of the bands of spot colours were chosen to emphasis the range of colours seen in the landscape, and as a reference to the layers and bands of the local geology.
